  • 1996 Monte Carlo Pump Shaft Question

Just acquired a 1996 Monte Carlo with 640 motor. Got carb fixed and fired the motor today in the driveway. Pump shaft sounds like it has a noise or vibration, but have heard some noises are common. However, the pump shaft can be shifted fore and aft about 1/4" and that to me doesn't sound normal. How much play is allowed? Shaft seems pretty snug in a radial motion, but I'm concerned about how much play is in the shaft. It slides freely, but wonder if there's any limits there. The front bearing and seal look ok visually. Am I spooked or is there an issue? Any info or pro advice would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

You could possibly be missing a rubber bumper on the end of the drive shaft that acts as a cushion. The bumper is about 1/4 inch thick.

The engine may be too far forward on the four engine mounts if you have the bumpers. Losen the mounts and slide the engine back as far as possible.
