  • Cavitation? 2000 Yamaha XL1200

Hi, hope someone can help me. I'm new to Jetski's & am experiencing something akin to a clutch slipping in a car when acccelerating from standstill.

I've heard it could be impeller damage or blown pump seal? I got the impeller out last night...see pics at : http://195.137.67.40/jetski/index.htm

It looks as though this damage could be repairable...is it bad enough to cause cavitation?

I've heard that its worth getting a pump seal kit anyway? Is this worthwhile & where would I best source one from?

    Thanks for any assistance...

If I were you the first thing I would have done was install a pump plug kit.

You may want to send your prop to Dave at Impros, or shoot him an email with your pix to see if the prop is fixable. His website is http://impros.com

You can get the pump plug kit from Carl at Island Racing or Riva, though I'm sure others sell it, these are the two I know of.

    Good luck!!

Your problem is due to an unsealed pump and the stock impeller is damaged--- i looked at your pictures---- your pump veins look OK from what i can see in the pics.

Add a Pump Seal Kit and an aftermarket impeller and it will make a world of difference--- we have both in stock--- give me a call and well get you hooked up with the right parts--- you have a few choices for the impeller and knowing your riding conditions and elevation can help make a better selection.

Its not worth repairing that stock impeller.

        Hi
I'm over in the UK...can you ship the parts to me here? I can't find too many aftermarket places this way.

Its mainly just fun recreational use, a bit of wakeboarding & wave jumping. Does that give you any better idea on the most suitable impeller type?

I have exactly the same problem on a newly purchased 98 GP800. When I can finally get the darn thing started (some kind of lost prime issue) it's just as you describe, like a clutch slipping! I hate to just barge in, but no one answered my post from earlier today. can anyone assist with either issue?

Sorry to cut in, <SPAN style="COLOR: black">I have made several attempts on posting a problem that you have had. Did you get yours fixed? And if so how did you do it? I have a XLT1200 also, It is at the point that I cant go over 12 MPH I am running about 4500 RPMs at that speed. It feels just like a clutch is slipping. Everything looks good at the prop location, there is a fine paper think gap between the Impeller and the housing.

If you are hearing strange noises like grinding the driveshaft may be stripped and not able to take the load. Remove the pump and check it out.
