  • difficult coupler removal on XL1200

I've used a chain wrench and a cheater bar but no luck with the removal of my Yamaha 1200 coupler. Is this a normal right hand thread? Do I need to add heat? Is there a better method I am chewing up my coupler with the chain wrench.

If you use heat it will help but it can damage your rear seals.
The coupler's on my GP1200s were very difficult to take off as the engine wanted to flip over when I torqued on the chain wrench.
I had to put a heavy piece of material folded over several times in to the exhaust port and then I wedged the motor under the railing on my balcony so that it could not rotate.
Then I put the chain wrench on the PTO coupler and stood on it.
If memory serves me correctly the coupler has to be turned counter-clockwise
(when looking at it from the rear) to remove.

I've used heat everytime with 100% success. Keep the heat on the coupler only. You're trying to melt the Loctite that's on the threads not the rear seals.

I just did this - same deal, motor out of the boat.
I used a rope in the combustion chamber to lock the crank. Then used a BFH, with a block of wood on the coupler, wacked it twice, came right off..
