  • O4' FX HO Cooling System Issue?

Last Sunday I was flushing the engine of my FX on the trailer with the water hose. Normally, I power up the engine and immediately start the hose. It always immediately starts pouring water out of the tail, and has always started "peeing" on the port side half way up the boat within 30 seconds. At first, everything went as to be expected, but then it stopped peeing out the side. It would put out a small stream when I goosed the gas, but nothing like it usually does. Normally, it's a steady stream whenever the engine is running and the hose is on. I turned the engine off when I noticed this, but could this be symptomatic of a larger problem? I'm thinking that there could be debris in the line, but it was only run in open water and no where near sand. Any thoughts?

It is very dependant on hose pressure, and at idle, some water may not come out of there at all - it's normal.

As long as the water is coming out at a normal pace when you are riding in the water, you should be ok. If not, check lines for debris.

Same with my FX, it's the hose pressure and how level the ski is in the drive way. But check when you take the ski out again to make sure.

I don’t know if I need to be concerned or not?

After my first day on the water with my recently purchase used 2002 Yamaha FX-140 I flushed the ski on its trailer in my driveway has detailed on ya’lls video clip.

Water did not pee out of the cooling systems by-pass ports on either side of the ski, it poured out of the rear of the exhaust.

I read other comments on this forum that the ski needs to be at the proper level / angle in your driveway for the water to come out to these side ports, is this correct?

When the ski is in the lake would water pee out of the two side ports at idle?

          Thanks,
          Ed

Not all skis do that on hose pressure, and it's normal. My FX140 doesn't do it much either.

40% or so of the water from the garden hose runs out the jet pump, the rest runs to the engine. On mine, I sometimes pinch off the line going to the jet pump to check if the pee line is clear. One time it was clogged with sea grass!

The jet pump on all skis is on the bottom, where the water is sucked in and forced out the rear. When running in the water, that pump is forcing cooling water through the engine. When flushing, the cooling system is flowing backwards, so the inlet down there is the exit.
