    I'm assuming when you rebuilt the carbs that you properly adjusted the arm that opens the needle and seat so that it is flush with the carb body? If its not flush, the n/s will not seal and flood the engine and cause a bog during acceleration (until it can burn all the fuel that has built up)...

    With the engine idling, look down the carbs and see if the "bulls eye" is dribbling.

    The lack of power (can't get over 2400 rpm) and the backfire sound more like an electrical/ignition issue.. possible a bad or loose sparkplug wire(s) ?? Just a guess.
