Question I have a XL-800 Yamaha Waverunner that I just got. When in the water I open the throttle all the way and it climbs to around 3000 RPMs and then starts to bog down for a second and then jumps to around 5000 -6000 RPMs and hauls butt. In rough water I had it around 55 -57 MPH. Also if it has not been started in a week it takes for ever to start. I replaced the fuel filter and ran it in the water again and it starts to bog down at around 3500 -4000 RPMs and then kicks in. I have read many things about what I should do some say to rebuild the carbs etc. Also I spoke to the Yamaha dealer and they said that they have two kits one is $35.00 and it has gaskets and the other has needles and seats but cost $155.00. Not sure which one I sould ge if this is he issue. Last what type of carbs on this ski?

Re: 01 XL-800 Bogs at 3000 RMPs
Sounds like you need some carb adjustments. Might be running a little bit lean on your air/fuel mixture. Take it to the dealer and they can adjust it for you if you dont a rebuilt carbs.
I have the same ski too, and after sitting a while I have found on most Yamahas you have to hold the start button and crank it a while, normal for that skiJetdude

what are your carb settings now stock on the 800 - Low Speed – 2-1/4 +/- ¼ (M),1-7/8 +/- ¼ (P)
High Speed – 1/2 +/- ¼ .what do your plugs look like ,you may want to read the carb tuning thread under the tech/f.a.q. section.it is very helpful.

Re: 01 XL-800 Bogs at 3000 RMPs
Carbs can't be seen on that model unless exhasut is removed. I hope for your sake the carbs aren't corroded. I find corroded carbs constantly from people who put their boats away wet and don't spray things down. An 01 might need it's carbs gone through by now anyway. In the good ole days, Yamaha had high mounted carbs that were easy to take care of. Good luck. Every average owner should own a new 4 stroke without carbs.

Re: 01 XL-800 Bogs at 3000 RMPs
I just pulled the carbs and they are corroded real bad. The back carb was the worst I took a nylon brush and scrubbed most of the corrosion off. Not sure if there is a better way to get into the grooves on the outside of the carb to remove all the corrsion. Also I purchased a service manual and it shows this model to have 2 BN44 Mikuni's but the kit I have the on the pulse side with the plastic diaphragm and fuel strainer all the gaskets are too small. Not sure if this carb is a SBN44, I looked at the kits SBT has and the gaskets look larger for the SBN than the BN. Last here is the real big issue on the back carb that was badly corroded the High speed and low speed jets are stuck when I tried turning them loose they broke off in the carb. Not sure if a machine shop can get these out fro me or not. Any ideas, thanks for all the help so far.
