  • Yamaha Tachometer Help

Both port and starboard tachometers on my '03 Yamaha LX-210 Jet Boat don't seem to work. Can someone out there help me troubleshoot the problem ?
    Here's what I noticed ...
    1) Tachometer's have three terminal connections - power (switched through keyswitch), ground, and signal. I measured 12V across power and ground when the keyswitch is 'ON'.

    2) There are a couple connectors between the engine compartment and the tachometer - I measured continuity on the signal lead.

    3) I find it unusual that BOTH tachs are not working ? Does this point to a clue ?

    A couple questions:
    1) Is there a way to 'bench test' the tachometer ?
    2) What should I see on the 'signal' lead of the tachometer ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Regards,
    Tom

        Re: Yamaha Tachometer Help

Is there anyway to bench test a suspected bad tachometer ? Can I connect 12V across the terminals and look for full-scale meter movement ?
How much are the replacement tachs and where can I get them ? Is there a better aftermarket substitute ?
        Thanks
        TK

Yes those tachs are pretty much junk.

Contact Faria Marine instruments in Uncasville, CT. They will repair the Tachs for $26 each.

If you want to go with new ones, I would be happy to buy the old ones from you to use as spares.

Call Yamaha customer service ,ask rep. if a "goodwill" gesture for you as a way to keep customer happy on such a new unit might be in order. If you purchased new ,ask your dealer if they will help you on this issue.Have changed MANY of these units. Also check the connector downstream from the tach ,between the Ign switch and tach, have seen wires "pull" out of the connector causing the tachometer to not function.

                Re: Yamaha Tachometer Help

I got it strait from Faria's customer service. These tachs are crap. They are meant to breathe but are made of materials that easily corode. Faria still considers them under warranty and the $26 to fix each of them is a "service fee".

                Good luck
