  • gp1200r sponsons adjustable???

I have a 2000 gp1200r, and the sponsons as i was looking yesterday are adjustable, what do sponsons do specifically, and would i feel any difference in changing them from the stock position, By the way they are the stock sponsons so you know

Yea, one of mine was adjusted all the way up and the other all the way down. I adjusted them level at about midpoint. I gained 1 mph but it seems a little unstable now. I think i am gonna play with mine a little more.

well mine are up, theyre only 2 way adjustable so i couldnt imagine them doing much but i thought someone might know from experience wasnt sure if i should lower them, awesome that might make it faster or leave them how they are

Basically, sponsons act as hull extenders and provide more or less bite in a turn (depending on position of sponson). As you turn, you lose hull service area and the ability for the hull to bite/grab. The latest issue of Watercraft World has a great article that covers many things, including sponsons and hull design/performance.

If you adjust them all the way up , you can spin out a lot easier . Fun for doing nose spins and such . If you adjust them all the way down , you get better grip in high speed turns .

Put them down and you can turn better and quicker. THe ski will be more stable but you lose top speed.

Put them up and you gain top speed in the straight direction but you lose handling in the turns. IT cam be a large speed difference too I have noticed 5-10MPH difference dependign on where the sponsons are at.

5-10?! Thats extreme. It doesnt seem like they are even in the water that much to produce that amount of friction to make that much of a mph change. I guess I'll figure it out on saturday :emoticons
