  • Superjet steering adjustment

How do I readjust the steering? Right now the handles are slightly turned to the right to go straight. If I take off the chinpad, what does that nut do on the steering cable before the piece with the spring? Is that the right nut? Thanks!

There should be an adjusting nut on each end of your steering cable. You can use either or both to adjust.Make sure there are no breaks in the cable that may have caused it to become out of adjustment.

Can you explain how the steering adjustment works? I see the adjustment nut at both the handlepole and the jet part of the ski. I plan on adjusting the nut near the handlepole... first: how do I take off the chinpad? It seems like the two bolts are hard to reach... easiest way?

What does the part of the steering cable with the spring that connects to the steering plate actually do? Does it put pressure on the adjustment nut? If I turn the adjustment nut... what will keep it from moving? Do I have to do anything with that spring to adjust the nut or can I just turn the nut? The manual offers no help on this and says in the case to get a yamaha dealer to do the work yet it seems so simple.

If the jet nozzle points to the left when steering is straight... I should move the adjustment nut toward the handlepole right?

Also: What does the UMI steering kit help with?

Sorry there are so many questions but a newb like me has to start from somewhere!

I'll take a few of these:
There are two places to adjust it (at least on mine)
          1) At the nozzle
          2) Under the chin pad

The "nut" you see is actually a lock nut. You loosen that up to adjust the cable length. I can't tell you without looking at the ski, which way to adjust your steering - I just don't remember... Generally, I set the steering to where I think it normally is when the ski "goes straight", note the angle of the cone, then adjust the cable until the steering is straight (don't change the angle of the cone - that's your baseline). Make sense..

All you're doing is making the overall length of the steering cable longer or shorter, which affects the "neutral" steering position. Make sense?

Thanks, once I got the chinpad off it was easy to adjust...

What screws up the steering? When I fall off and hold on to the bars does this stretch the cable?

Sorry ,I didnt see your reply.

They just break down over time due to normal wear and tear.Sometimes the plastic outer casing will develop cracks, and allow the metal wound steel casing to corrode. This will lead to cable failure while riding and under load(eventually). That is why I mentioned to inspect the cable...just to be safe.I have seen the plastic outer casing distigrate, and allow the cable to collapse.Which will show when under load and try to steer...it wont turn.A simple test for this is to have a friend hold the nozzle firmly in the straight position, and try and turn the steering via handlebars. If you can turn it up top,and not move the nozzle...replace the cable.

The spring that you are reffering to is on the connector on each end of the cable.Correct ? That is to allow you to pull back the sleeve that locks it onto the ball that is mounted to both your nozzle and steering arm, allowing you to disconnect the cable for adjustment. To adjust, break lock nut loose-pull back sleeve-lift off of ball-,turn in or out as needed-set back on ball-test ride-readjust if needed-lock nut. When doing your initial adjustment, try to leave the rear connector in a somewhat central position. This way if you ever need to adjust again, you can do it all from the rear, and not have to get into the chinpad.
