• Winterizing XL1200

Hey Bryan
I need your assistance I am looking into winterizing my Yamaha XL1200 but I have a few questions.
1. Where do I find the carberators so I can fog them for the winter. Also I put one teaspoon of oil in each spark plug correct??

2. The hose that comes with the PWC to run the boat out of the water, could you stick the hose in a bottle of anti-freeze and run that through the water system to ensure that all the water is out?? Or will the hose not suck up the anti-freeze from the bottle.

3. What else do I need to do other than gas stabilizer, grease the fittings and cables and clean and wax the boat.

Also I left the gas in the boat for 3 weeks hopeing I would get another chance to go back out. Should I drain the gas out of the boat and put in new gas with stabilizer in it??
And one more thing the oil that is in the oil injector should I drain it out at the beginning of next season or will it stay good over the winter. (I use synthetic oil)

They want $150.00 canadian to winterize the boat I figure I could do it myself cheaper.

Sorry so many questions

You will see two plugs in the top of your flame arrestor (airbox), and that's where you spray in your fogging oil.

The hose adaptor does not siphon, it's force fed by the hose. There is no need for antifreeze in a Yamaha anyway.

Your gas will be fine, just add the stabil, fill the tank up and run it through while fogging so the fuel in the lines and carbs gets stabilized too. The oil does not go bad over a winter storage.

Rotty,

Like Bryan said, pull the caps on the flame arrester and spray the fogging oil into there. The flame arrester is the big black oval on the starboard side of the craft. Both of your carbs are mounted to the underside of it. I have a Yamaha XL also -- very nice craft.

I will look to see if I can find the flame arrestor (airbox) The Yamaha should be running as I am spraying the fogging into the carbs correct???
Thanks for all your help I will try it out this afternoon.
Hey Hollywood have you done any modifications to your machine. Also do you have a seat strap on yours or do you know a place you can by one???
Thanks again

If you look at figure 2.1 of the Yamaha 1100/1200 Install/Removal guide in the Tech section, you can clearly see the three plugs in the center of the airbox (the black box on the bottom of the picture).

Rotty,

My XL only has a 760 in it. I bought it for the little lady so it doesn't need to have the crazy power of the 1200. But here are the mods that I've done to it for a little more umph:

- R&D intake grate
- Tau Ceti 3.5" Rec. Flame arresters
- Carbon Tech Reeds
- Boyesen reed valve stuffers
- Riva ride plate

I want to throw some aftermarket sponsons on it and maybe a Skat impeller whenever I get the $.

Hey Bryan
I can get into the technical section but when I try to click on to Yamaha 1200 it won't open the pictures for me maybe its my computer. Thanks for the photo I haven't been able to look at my machine to see if I can see the plugs or not the photo you sent me was that a 1200 cc Mine looks different. Do you have to remove the exhaust to be able to get to the airbox to spray in the fogging oil or should I just be able to reach them with the seat off.????

Sorry for all these questions But I do believe this is the site to get all my answers

You asked about an XL1200, and that is exactly what the photos are of. If it looks differnt then you do not have an XL1200.

Click on the Get Acrobat button and install it - you either do not have it installed, or have an older version. Then the guides will work fine.

What year XL1200 is this. I believe the 1999 and newer ones have the 1200 PV motor where the carbs are underneath the exhaust system.

Like I said....that's not an XL1200. Those are XL1200 Limiteds, and XLT1200's. Totally different skis.

He needs to clarifiy what ski we're talking about. In the case of the newer 1200, I'm not sure where the fog access point is, if there is one. The service manaual does not give storing procedures, but my buddy here is bringing in his owners manaul (do you have one) and I'll see what it says tommarow.

Hey Bryan

On all my paper work it says it is a XL1200 but on the riding practice book is says its for a 2000 XL1200 LTD. I am trying to find the maintance book but its in the garage somewhere. I will have to look again for it. Its getting really cold up here and I better get it winterized. On the fogging oil I bought it says Method # 1 Spray in to carberators or air box
Method # 2 Spray for 5-10 seconds into each cylinder and start engine to allow the oil to travel throughout the engine.
Is Method # 2 another way I could do it.
Do you have any pics on the XL1200 LTD 2000 model?
I will download Acro in the mean time
Thanks for everything!!

OK, You have a XL1200-L. Unfortunately it's impossible for you to fog your engine through the carbs while it's running, like every other ski. You will need to use method #2, HOWEVER, do it as the last step in the winterization process, and do not run the ski, just crank it over, to distribute the oil.
