Both power valves failed on 1 of my 04 xlt800 2 weekends ago...both valves broke away from their shafts,(these were supposedly updated versions),,one valve stayed behind to rub the side of the PTO piston ring..the other was no where to be found..only a nick in the mag piston. Both cylinders had good compression..ordered the SBT engine that Tuesday,,received that Friday,,finished install Saturday am. Broke it in per breakin instructions while putting 14 gals thru it w/50:1 Yamalube while still using the oil injection system last Sunday...Ran fine. did not do any 100% throttle runs. Took today off of work to run the lake with my wife on our waverunners. I noticed today I could not get up to WOT,,,(7,000 rpms)..6750 at best. Still had a little premix in the tank when i filled it up this morning and still had breakin plugs installed...plugs are black but not fouled. Motor runs and sounds great. Just missing the last 250 rpms...Think the missing PV is blocking exhaust flow in the waterbox???..I tryed to find it before wrapping up the install.

Re: Thanks SBT !!!
if your plugs are black and sooty, then yes, go ahead and try leaning it out a little bit. Theres a procedure to do in my manual, involving tying the jetski to a pile with a 50 ft rope, and going full throttle, that way you can tune the needle while its running (but you have to keep at least 60 pounds on the ski to keep the pump submerged.)

Re: Thanks SBT !!!
But shouldn't the factory settings be ok?? They were on the original motor...The method you mentioned for setting the high speed needles sounds a little risky
I was thinkin :emoticonn maybe removing the Flame Arresters and tweaking the needles in 1/8 or 1/4 turn increments and lookin for more rpms,,then do a plug chop to make sure the engine is not goin over lean!!! How do you reach the needles,,they are dang near under the pipe on this motor..maybe install some stiff tubing over the needle heads for a flexable extension???:emoticont

Re: Thanks SBT !!!
sometimes the factory settings can vary from engine to engine. It's perfectly fine to be 1/4 turn up or down from the settings, but if you go a quarter turn lean, be sure that you arent running it too lean, and also make sure to verify with a spark plug check.
