I have a 1998 XL1200W. One day the engine sounded a little off. I tested the compression and found one cylinder had close to none. I pulled the engine apart and found the piston and cylinder. So running it would have done more damage. I am thinking about just buying a remanufactured block and replacing the entire thing. I would suggest you get a second opinion but I found that it was about the same price to repair it as it would be to replace it.
