  • WaveRaider 1100 No start

Well, my 95 WaveRaider has been sitting for over a year, and I decided to get it running good and clean it up a little. I installed a new battery and went to crank it and got nothing. No guages no click, nothing.... I replaced the main fuse, and pulled the electrical cover. When I cross the solenoid with a screwdriver, the starter will start to turn the engine over, but doesn't have enough oomph. I'm still puzzled why the buttons don't work though, is there any other fuses or connections that I can look into? If the starter is just bad, then why don't my guages or buttons work? I'm stumped. Please help

if you get nothen at all then the relay is bad { but jumping the relay it should crank . try to turn the engine by hand if you cant pull your jetpump its prob salted up .

Yes, remove plugs and turn engine over by hand and check for binding...How good is your battery? If no binding is found and you have a strong battery, check ground wire to engine....ski only has the one fuse and guage will only light up after engine starts...

Well, the battery is new and fully charged, where is the ground cable at on this thing? It is possible that someone in my family hooked the battery up backwards earlier this season, and it hasn't ran at all this year. When I first jumped the solenoid, the starter did nothing, then it spun up really slow, eventually gaining more speed and finally engaging, but not turning the engine over. This ski has only been in fresh water BTW. What would be screwed up by the battery getting hooked up backwards?

it blows the fuse...does the engine bind?????

It doesn't blow the fuse, I just replaced the fuse for good measure. The engine turns freely by hand. I'm just wondering why the handlebar controls don't work. They've got power, but it's not getting to the starter relay I guess.

If the battery was connected wrong it will burnout the stator, possibly the CDI. Check the stator wire for any signs of heat damage. Other than that sounds like the relay.

Will do, thanks. I was thinking that the relay was probably bad, along with the starter.

                  Re: WaveRaider 1100 No start

connecting the battery backwards won't harm the stator or cdi...it will blow the fuse...the fuse only protects the starter circuit...the ignition system on that model isn't connected to the starter system in any way...if engine doesn't bind then i agree...it's the starter or ground wire or battery.....

That's good news then. What ground wire are you talking about though? The system is getting power so the Neg. battery cable is fine. Is there another ground lead somewhere?

                      Re: WaveRaider 1100 No start

The ground wire runs from the battery to one of the starter mounting bolts(usually).

Make sure the battery is fully charged also.

                        Re: WaveRaider 1100 No start

if you do a voltage drop test with your mulitmeter you will most likely find a bad wire that is proably in your starting circuit which would cause the starter to not get enough voltage causing it to spin slower than normal!

if your cables are good and battery good and you touch the relay post and it spins slow then the starter is toast or you have a dead battery and just think it good or a bad ground wire , try putting a jumper cable from the NEG batt side to the block and see if the starter spins faster and cranks the engine ok .

That's a good idea, I'll try that one for sure. I'm going to get the battery tested too, it charged up real nice, but I guess it could be defective from the factory. It's just an O'reilly junker.
