    Hey,

I bought new 2001 XL800. So far, I really satisfied with the machine.
However, I really have a concern with the Power valve.
I was told that there is a possibility of the valve breaking off and slipping into the cylinder, destroying the engine.
I wanted to know if anyone has experience with this condition.
    1. Is there any history so far of the power valve breaking. ( likely , unlikely).
    2. Would it be recommended to purchase an extended warranty to cover repairs to the power valve?
    3. Should the power valve be pulled and inspected for cracks, wear and tear?
    4. Is pulling the power valve a simple job. (it looks like a fairly easy job.)
    5. Can the power valve be removed and the ski operated?

I'm new to jetski's (long time power boater) and really enjoy the acceleration and speed of the jetskt. I'm going through a learning process and really appreciate advice and insight from experienced jetskier's.

    Thanks

1 - for your year it is not likely the valve will break, you have the updated valves already. Your lever links, however, are likely to allow the pivot pins at the tops of the valves to slide out and allow the valves to drop.

    2 - your call - it's a mix of sucess with coverage.

3 - this typically voids the warranty, but check with your local dealer. You can check the pins for location and striaghtness if you can open them.

    4 - On the 800, it's very simple, yes.

5 - You cannot operate without the valves, no.

      Re: power valve

hey i work on yamahas every day here at a marina we see alot of top end jobs i probley put in and rebuild 100 engines a year. alot of rebuilds come from powervalve faliures caused by the powervalve breaking falling down into the cylinder as the piston comes up the two collide causeing damage. if you remove the powervalve you are deffeting the purpose of a y.p.s if it was designed to be removed yamaha would not have put them in. the job of removing them isn`t to bad you will need to replace the oil seals when you do the job. the powervalve can be removed and the ski still will run but at 3/4 to full throttle you will see a huge difference in performance.
