  • '94 raider starter problems

hey fellas, helping a friend w/ a 701 raider that doesnt turn over anymore.Hooked to charger or jumper cables, starter will click or make noise as if it is trying to turn but doesnt turn motor.Have tried hooking another ground with same result. Is this caused by low voltage(charger has 50 amp start option)or is the problem within starter(windings, brushes). Are these starters rebuildable ?Also can I remove starter without pulling motor? I cant even SEE the starter so......Any trouble shooting advise would be greatly appreciated. As always, thanx so much.

You could have a seized starter bendix. Probably the easist thing to do is to pull off the flywheel cover (toward the front of the motor) and look at the flywheel, starter and bendix. If you have to pull the starter it's a challenge only because of the limited space to work in - but the actual work is cake. The best investment is a Clymer manual for like $30. They cover everything.

Forgot to specify - yes, you can pull the starter without removing anything else. Stand on the right side of the ski and kiss the exhaust pipe where it says 'YAMAHA' in big letters. Reach your right and left hands around and under that pipe and touch the motor. Then feel your way down to the round starter housing. There are two mounting bolts on my 1100. I think one mount bolt holds the ground wire and theres a stud on the housing for the power wire. Get all this removed then pull the starter toward the rear while you twist it - if your o-ring is good you'll have a hard time. Sorry if that was long-winded.

before all that....remove spark plugs and turn engine over by hand at rear of engine (coupler) and check for any binding...........

thanx guys...will check that out tomorrow.I am leaning toward weak starter that finally gave out as it had been acting like it was weak or the voltage was weak in the weeks before it finally stopped. Ive been kinda afraid to turn over by hand to check for lockup since the last time it was on the water it may have injested a little water when it flipped.not sure I want to face that reality (seizure) just yet. Will report my conclusions.
