Rubber Plug in front storage of FXHO

There is a rubber drain plug in the front storage compartment of my FXHO. Can I just pull it out so the water keeps draining out of it? I keep my mooring ropes in it so if I don't pull the plug, the compartment builds up with sand/water.

Is there a downside in keeping the plug out?
