  • GP 800 starting problem

I have a 1998 GP 800 that had a new engine last summer and this spring it wouldn't start. I put in a charged battery with good connections and when I pushed the starter button, nothing happened. No clicking, nothing. There was no voltage at the starter, so I exposed the starter relay and there was 12 volts at the hot side of the relay and something like 6.9 volts at the starter side of the relay. I used a remote starter across the relay terminals and nothing. I started suspecting battery or ground problems and rechecked the battery charge and connections. They were fine. I followed the ground wire from the battery to the block and discovered the connection was loose, so I tightened it and now when the starter button is pushed, I get the clicking sound at the solenoid, 5 or 6 volts at the starter and the starter cable gets hot. So, I assume the starter is bad?
    Thanks for the help

    Re: GP 800 starting problem

Sounds like the battery is bad, You need a min of 10.5 cranking volts for the engine to run. 6.5 will not even crank it over.
