  • Yamaha 2006 VX110 Deluxe low oil pressure indication

2006 VX110 deluxe waverunner has sporadic low oil indation. Replaced the engine with a SBT engine two years ago. We have about 30 hours on the new engine. Usually after about 20 minutes of riding then the low oil pressure indacation comes on. We turn off the waverunner, then turn it back on and the low oil pressure indication does not come on immediatly. After riding for a few more minutes it will come back on. Sometimes it wont come back on for a couple of miles. Brought it to the Yamaha dealer. Oil is Yamalube 10W-30, oil filter is fine, there is no oil in the bilge, oil level is fine, oil only has 15 hours since changing it out one year ago. Yamaha dealer states they found a lot of bogus error codes on the waverunner when they did a diagnostic. They stated it "might" be caused by water getting in the electrical connections. They cleared all the error codes out and stated that the large number of error codes could have caused the low oil pressure indicator to come on when the waverunner gets overwhelmed by error codes. Is this true, I have never heard of this, I cannot find anything about it, and the service manual never mentions this possibility. If this was true wouldn't other indications come on randomly with each faulty indication event, not just the oil pressure indication? Despite my pesimism I payed the maintenance fee and finally today took it back out on the water to test and see if the waverunner works okay. Sure enough after 20 minutes of riding the low oil pressure light comes back on. No oil in the bilge, oil filer is intact, no evidence of an oil leak, oil level is nominal. I am hesitant to take it back to the dealer and pay a fee for a non-fix. Any ideas on what might be causing the indication, is it spurious error codes caused by water in the electrical connections clogging up the waverunner computer as the Yamaha dealer susptects but cannot substantiat? Is it the oil pump? I have also read on this forum that performing an oil change and utilizing 20W-50 oil may help?
I plan on changing the oil out with some synthetic 20W-50 I can buy at autozone, and changing the filter as the next cheapest course of action. Thoughts?

I should also note that the yamaha dealer stated that when they viewed the error codes that there was never an error code for low oil pressure. They stated that I never had a low oil pressure event despite the low oil pressure indication going off when riding the waverunner.

Update: waverunner still at Yamaha dealer service department. They state that the waverunner computer does not indicate low oil pressure as having occured and that "star codes" are filling up in the waverunner computer. They suspect this causes the low oil pressure indication. They cannot determin what causes the "star codes." Next step is for them to take it out on the water to see if they can further determine what is causing the low oil pressure indication. Bottom line the Yamaha dealer is stumped as to what is causing the problems. Anyone deal with "star codes" before?
