Xl700 fired #2 cykinder

2002 XL700 fired the #2 cykinder... During the tear down I found the the rear water hose connection on the exhaust manifold totally clogged with sand. Did this start the overheasting problem???? As it overheated the oil line to the #2 cylinder melted, it had came out of the clip and was resting against the head.
