  • Yamaha 2006 VX110 Deluxe Waverunner has excessive STAR CODEs.

2006 Yamaha VX110 deluxe waverunner has star codes causing low oil pressure indication. Took waverunner to yamaha dealer because waverunner was indicating it had low oil pressure indication when driving it. Yamaha dealer stated that diagnostic checking resulted in them determining that the waverunner never had a low oil pressure problem, however, the waverunner computer had many "star codes" when they hooked it up to their diagnostic computer system. They stated that these excesive star codes could cause the oil pressure indication to go off erroneously. Need help in determining what would cause the star codes to keep this problem of the erroneous oil pressure indication from going off? Any ideas are appreciated.

What was the Dealers comments on why the star codes came up?

Re: Yamaha 2006 VX110 Deluxe Waverunner has excessive STAR CODEs.

The dealer suspects that it could be caused by corrosion on the electrical plugs, or a short in the electrical harness, or even possibly a faulty sensor or electronic component. To quote them, they stated: "were stumped". So....to possibly eliminate the change out of parts at random hoping it will fix it they plan on taking it out on the water (will cost me $80.00 with no guarantee it will result in any useful data), then when the low oil pressure indication starts going off to get the diagnostic code off of the waverunner itself by pressing the button on the indicator for eight or so seconds. They are hoping it will display an error code other than the star code they read in their shop to hopefully give an indication of what is faulty. The low oil pressure indication does not go off when running the waverunner on land with a water hose hooked up. Hopefully once they get it on the water a fault code will display, it is better than changing out parts randomly to see if that fixes it, I don't have the funds to change out parts just for the heck of it.

I am not a waverunner mechanic, but shouldn't there be a way to test sensors, electronic components, and the electrical harness's without the need for a full replacement? In the waverunner maintenance manual there is a way to pressure test the low oil pressure sensor to make sure it is sending out the right signal for instance, if it does not meet the criteria replace the sensor. Might the sensor be sending out erroneous signals? Thus why no other erroneous indications go off other than the low oil pressure? That is just a hypothesis. So the question might be under the current premise "Why does only the low oil pressure light go off with these star error codes? Does the waverunner when it gets to many star codes default to sending out a low oil pressure indication?"

I could go on, but that is enough for now. Any comments or suggestions are appreciated.

I should note that the Yamaha dealer and mechanic are good people, just under the current situation they have very little clues to define the way ahead to fix the problem, and hopefully with this forum someone may have some viable ideas that may have not yet been considered.

I have two identical waverunners. I swapped the ECU, the problem of the oil pressure indicator going off did not go away. Not sure what to do next. Change the oil pressure switch? When that goes bad could that cause star codes? Any inputs appreciated.
