  • I've sheared 3 woodruff keys

    Yamaha 1100.
Motor turns easy with plugs out.
    Pump is not binding.
I keep shearing woodruff keys - very puzzled about this.
Do you think I'm not tightening the flywheel bolt enough?

You could have a bent flywheel or your not putting it on tight enough.

I think I am not putting it on tight enough. When I pulled the flywheel cover, the flywheel would just spin on the shaft. I'm really going to ape it down now.

        Bolt M10 -
Tightening Torque N.m 74 kgf.m 7.4 Ft Lbs. 53. Do not overtighten it. Go with the specs, it should solve your problem. Get a decent Ft Lb. Torque Wrench Sears makes very nice one. If you really want something nice then get the digital ones, or the ones you preset when you reach the correct torque it clicks to let you know.

You don't want to strip that bolt, if you do is engine out time.

I tried to use a torque wrench. Not enough room. I used the shade-tree, ape-it-down method. Everything is working fine now. Thanks for the advice.
