fuel switch no shutting off the fuel

So I was getting the ski ready for the winter and I went to run the gas out so I turned the fuel off. Well at least that is what the switch said. Instead the ski started running faster so I switch it to the reserve and is slowed down to the same speed as when the switch was in run. I tried it again and it did the same thing. What in the heck is going on? I replace the switch about a 4 weeks ago and never tried to shut the fuel off while the ski was running.

When the valve was placed in the off position the ski ran faster because it leans out as the gas runs out. Dont run it out of fuel, just use fuel stabilizer in the gas, let it run a few minutes then shut it off and turn the valve to the off position. Never run a 2 stroke out of fuel, you can damage the engine.
