  • Waveraider 1100 airleak and bogging down

My 95 waveraider 1100 (138hrs) is giving driving me nuts, I picked this thing up cheap a few weeks ago after it had been sitting for a year or two. It ran after a fresh battery, but would bog down around 45mph. Checked compression on all three cylinders and its 115 PSI on all three, which I am seeing in forums is stock. I pulled the stock carbs (Mikuni 38s) and ordered SBT rebuild kits, and an oil pump block off kit. Went through the carbs and found clogged up jets and seats. Put everything back together per the SBT instructions and did a pop off test. All three carbs are pretty close and popping off at 45 PSI. I set the high and low speed adjustments back to their original position. I replaced the intake gasket, but not the carb base gaskets, although they all looked fine. I put the carbs back in with the original needle and seats, I believe they are the stock 1.2's. I installed 3 new NGK plugs that where gaped to match the old ones. Pulled the oil pump off and installed a block off plate with a new gasket from SBT. Drained the gas out, and replaced with fresh 32:1 yamalube 2w premix. Stuck in a new OEM inline fuel filter for good measures. It fired right up on the hose, but revs up on its own and wont shutoff on the kill switch or lanyard. I know its two cycle dieseling, so I am killing it when it does this by a a quick WOT. I have read that this is caused by a lean condition due to an air leak after the carbs. So I pulled the oil block off kit and carbs again and reseated everything to make sure it was all tight and not leaking. I know the rear crank seal is also a frequent culprit for this failure, so I pulled the PTO cover and the seal looks fine. It does not appear to be popped out of the crank case, and looks to be in good condition. What else is there to look for here? I fired it back up on the hose and the reving issue seemed to be gone. I ran it out to the lake and it idled fine on the trailer in the water on the ramp. After warming it up, I decided to take it out to see if I had this thing fixed. It ran fine up to about 45 then started bogging and loosing power( same issue on reserve position). Acceleration was quick up to 40 or 45 then it bogs and will die if I dont get out of the throttle. I brought it back home and put it on the hose in the yard and the reving on its own issue returns. I visually inspected the crabs while giving it some gas to look for any dripping but they all three look like they are spraying as the should be, all the butter fly's move in unison when I hit the gas. So Im stumped and thinking yanking the motor and replacing the crank seals would be premature. I do have a new set of OEM crank seals ordered and on the way, if this issue takes me down that dreaded road. Ive also got carb base gaskets, and a clymers manual on the way just waiting on Fedex at this point. I have read about leak down testing but not sure I have the gauge or the knowledge to do it, I do have compressed air available. So here are my questions for the many pros on this forum:

    1. The reving on its own only happens out of the water, is this normal? Is there a specific amount of hose pressure required to prevent this?

    2. Would 1.5 needle and seats be worth my money in tackling this issue? Should I get new high and low screws?

    3. Should i rebuild the fuel pump? the fuel pickups in the tank look ok to me.

Any ideas or help with this thing would be great, because I running out of ideas fast.

    Thanks,
    Buck

You have an air leak some place, the case needs to be pressure checked and also see if the throttle shafts seem loose in the carbs, this two will suck air if the seals are worn.

Is there a procedure for pressure checking the case on the SBT site?

Re: Waveraider 1100 airleak and bogging down

Correct me if I am wrong but the 32:1 is jumping out at me. Thats really soaking her down with oil. As lean as those 95's were set from the factory that sure isn't helping it out.

And also remembering back from my shoulder breaking experience from 2005 trying to fix a bogging issue on a 1995 1100 Raider, The pre 1996 had bogging issues right from the factory ??

Buck - This is just some other stuff I personally would check into but Tech Support is correct about pressure checking the engine.

On the Raiders at least you have more open room to inspect around the engine for oil / oil and fuel leaking from a leaking case, or leaking around the crank seals.

Several years back I had a similar issue on a Wave Venture I bought "Cheap" would not get past 35mph for nothing. Ran great on the garden hose. I rebuilt the carbs over and over and over.

After nearly committing well nevermind on that I found that someone replaced the positive battery cable going to the electronics box mounted to the front of the engine. In turn they removed the ground wire to cylinder one coil but forgot to put it back on.

Re: Waveraider 1100 airleak and bogging down

          Thanks Chad,
The SBT instructions that came with the block off kit said run 32:1 for break in. Im planning on going to 40:1 or 50:1 if i ever get her running well enough to get the 10 gallons of 32:1 burnt up. I replaced the carb base gaskets last night and that seemed to help the lean revving on the hose issue. We will see if this demon returns. The throttle bodies are tight and i pulled all three plugs to see if any where white from the lean condition and all looked good. I have the clymers manual now so hoping to take it the lake and try it out maybe do some adjusting on the low speed screws.
          Thanks

Re: Waveraider 1100 airleak and bogging down

Installed carb base gaskets and adjusted high and low speed screws to factory settings from the shop manual. Took it to the lake and the bogging issue seems to be solved. The water is sill a bit cool to be doing much testing so we will see how it does once I can run it for a longer period of time.
