Looking for help diagnosing the failure of XLT800 motor, ski is new to me. I am very mechanical and have lots of experience with engines, but not with waverunners specifically.
Took it out for a gentle ride along with my XL700. I had checked out the 800 before riding, run a little bit on the trailer and did a quick once over, but ski had been trailered significantly since last use. Almost immediately the 800 had trouble idling and was running slightly rough, would not idle on its own but did with slight gas. I thought that there was a gas flow issue after carbs had sat over winter. It did ride alright when it opened up, was slow getting going but did get up to a few MPH shy of 50. Did not ride long since it was acting weird.
Once back and investigating, determined the compression on the front cylinder was shot, back was still strong. I know the common problems with these engines are the power valves and the oil injection, both of which I was planning on taking care of but now definitely will be. But I do not think either of those were the culprit here.

The power valve pin is not broken and it did seem to slide up and down reasonable even though it was clipped. Bottom of the skirts were in good condition. There is some liquid in the crankcase which I am going to soak out tonight, looks like gas oil mix.
Trying to determine what caused this, don't want to put it all together and have another incident because I missed a critical aspect. Was planning on doing a top end kit but really want to hear the opinions of the experienced.
