  • Blaster II perf. mods

    HI,
I'm interested in adding a ferf. pipe like FP or Pro-Tec to my Yamaha Blaster II 760.
I was told that after installing the pipe there will develop a lean spot on OEM 44' Mikunis at 3/4 of throttle that can badly damage the engine.
The only solution is a carb swap attending that a rejet of the OEM carbs is not useful or the use of a mixture of 50/50 race gas and 92 regular.
I've read the installing instructions of their pipe on the FFP site and they reccomend to use 92 gas only a minor rejet of stock 44' and a rev limiter change.
To tell the truth I've read about seizure problems with Pro-tec pipe on a Blaster II on groupK site, they in fact use the stock pipe.
Do you think about this problem? If I mount a couple of 46 Novis or 47 Buckshots could I safely mount the pipe? Is there a cheaper way to solve the problem?
What other perf mods could I try?
    Thank you Michele

While the lean spot in the "I" series carb does exist, and some modifications may make it worse, it dosent have to be fatal. I have my original "I" carbs on my 98xpl and in bone stock (pre update) form, they did exibit a lean condition. At that time I "massaged" the inner venturi and found (by a home made flow bench) that it did improve the 3/4 signal.

If you look at the design of the stock inner venturi of the I carbs, youll see it is about as wing shaped as a bus. Changing that profile makes the stock carbs very usable even thru mods.

Or, you may just want to keep the stock restrictive air box and add the pipe.

      Excuse me Chris,
I have a 1997 Yamaha Waveblaster II with 760 engine (64X). This engine mounts a couple of 44 SBN Mikunis. I think they are not "I" series carbs. Yamaha started to use them, if i'm not wrong with the introduction of the 800 powervalved engine in 1998.
This is the reason for what I was very disappointed when I was told about the lean spot on OEM 44' in the 760 package!!
      Any reply is highly appreciated!!

Ahh, my bad blaster, I thought that 97 had the I bodies. SD started using the I's in 97.

I would think that the SBN's would be fine.
