Ok on my carb problems. If I cut the gas off prior to shutting off the motor when I go to restart I cut the as on and hit the starter it fires up within 5 seconds. Leave the gabefore parking when I getit takes 20 +- sec to start.

When I checked carbs I didnt notice needles and seats leaking I had used same springs before the rebuild What do I need to do now change the needles and seats? Bought carb kits from SBT and changed everyting in carbs ended up putting old springs back in though.

change the needle and seats then do the two tests for proper operation pop off and pressure test. this will tell you whether you have leaking needles or not.

You need a phillips screwdriver to change needles and seats. If they are new, they won't leak.

The needle and seats are new thats what I cant understand why it is hard to start when the gas is left on. I am at a loos for a solution.

Well, gasoline cannot enter the motor if the needles and seats will not allow it to happen no matter where the fuel selector valve is set.

New means nothing. Are they leaking?

BTW, Needles and seats do not come with SBT or any rebuilding kits.

I had the same problem and for two weeks I was trying to find out what i did wrong I got a pop off tester and found that the new needles where not leaking with the diaphragm off but when I put the carb back together they leaked :emoticonr put the old lever back in now all is well :) I found out that you might have to bend the new lever so that it is flush with the carb body. Did not see that piece of info on the video.

Ok here let me see if I am on the right page .. The needle and seat.. It is under the diaphram composed of a lever and spring which pulls the needle out of the seat correct?


How do ya get the brass seat out ?
Where can I get new needles and seats?

With the carb apart when ya press on the lever to pull the needle out of the seat gas flows when ya let it go it stops. I have not been able to see it leak yet not saying it doesnt with the diaphram in like noted above ..

you need to fill the spot where the needle goes with gas / carb cleaner ect then use a pop off tester to chec off and for leaks . the brass is held in with a small screw and you can pull it out with a needle nose pliers . do not mix needs and seats there a match set .call Bill he can sell ya new N/S

Pair of pliers and phillips screw driver remove screw then pull out seat dealer sells new for 20 DO YOU HAVE A POP OFF GAUGE? if not buy one that is the only way to know if the needles are leaking not watching them to see if gas goes down.

Think of how many uses there are for pop off testers.

Needles and seats. You never know if they leak unless you test them, You cannot set pop off pressure without testing them. How many starters and solenoids get burnt up tyring to start skis with leaky needles and seats, due to being too rich to start.? Sparkplug fouled?
Accellerator pump nozzels. Clogged up causing a big hesitation when accellerating? A PO tester will tell you if they are clogged up. Got a fuel vent or water check valve stuck ? A PO tester will tell you if it is not working properly.
Changing pump oil you need to test the ability to hold pressure so it will not leak causing you to pay hundreds of dollars in pump repairs.

There are lots of uses for this $50.00 tool........ All of which save hundreds of dollars in repairs later.

Bill I have a pressure tester ya buy at parts store that will pull vac or put pressure on something will it work seems like it cost 40-50 when I bought it.

The thing I downloaded on carb rebuild is a little vague as far as how to do the pop off check can you help me out by explaining how to do it.



A few people have said something about diaphram might be the problem do you know of any probs with SBT gasket kits?

Any pressure type pump with a guage and a check valve in the line will work. My best PO tester is an old beer keg pump that I mounted a guage on and put a SD check valve in the line.

To test a carb put the pressure line on the inlet fitting and your finger over the outlet fitting. On an oem carb, pump up about 20psi and stop, watching the guage for 30 seconds to see if it leaks off anything at all. If it does the needles leak and need to be replaced. If not, keep pumping until you see a drastic drop of pressure. That is the PO pressure, read it on the guage. Repeat the test three times.

I perfer to remove the diaphram cover and diaphram. Lay the carb with the needles and seat facing up. Squirt WD40 into the needle and seat cavity so it completely covers the needle. Now apply pressure just like as described above. Look for bubbles around the needle. If they do appear, replace the N&S with a new one. Then go ahead and finish testing to see if it pops off at the desired PO pressure. You can bend the lever to get it level with the carb body. Replace the diaphram and cover. Retest the leak down again at around 20 psi. If it leaks, bend the arm further down slightly and replace the diaphram and diaphram cover and retest.

This will solve the SBT diaphram tip length issue and they will work fine.

The biggest problem with SBT diaphrams is that most people do not do the proper testing. They just install the kit and think it will work perfectly. They do not want to spend the money to buy the proper tools to do the job correctly. You can make mistakes even with genuine Mikuni kits if you do not test your work. This is what seperates professional mechanics from backyard mechanics, having the proper tools and knowledge to know what is important and what isn't.
But then again, some guys just get lucky. Even the blind squirrel finds a nut now and then.
