  • Help with 96 wave venture 1100

Can somebody look at the pix in the link below and offer some advice. I'm doing the top end rebuild and fairly new to pwc's motors. The kit is from wsm and it come with all the gaskets. What i would like to know is that do i need any special compound to assemble or is the sealant on the gskets allready. I'm also very suspicious of the carb running too lean or that the lower gasket is bad making it run lean and causing the damage in the picture. The piston is dammaged on the exhaust side. I'm putting new gaskets in so i need some info on how to troubleshoot the carb and how to adjust it if needed. Any help would be appreciated.

Well, it's definitely from running lean - After you reassemble it, make sure you pressure test it, to rule out case leaks. Go through and rebuild your carbs and pump too - which cylinder is this off of, and how do the other two look?

Good luck with WSM kits...I highly recommend you trash it and get yourself OEM components.

Coat your base gasket with Permatex 2, and the head and cover gaskets with High-Tach.

Brian, how do you tell if one carb is running lean and where is the adjustment for that on a 96 venture? What should the settings be at? The damage is on the #3 piston(closest to the rear) The other 2 piston are in good condition. I also noticed that when i took off the original pistons, there was only one washer next to the wrist pin bearing, should there be two? They didn't give me washers in my rebuild kit. Do i even need them or should i use the old one instead?

First, see this Carb Tuning Guide from the Technical section on the left.

I would be suspecting either air in the fuel lines, a failed pump, or blocked internal filter on the #3 carb if that one went out and the others look fine. That is the fisrt one fed by the pump.

The OEM setup included a washer on each side of the wrist pin bearing. Recent caged-needle bearings do not need them. Look in your case for the missing washer.

With that kind of damage, I would REALLY inspect your crank bearings and reeds.

on 3 cylinders you need to check the plugs to see if its running lean. the last carb is not usually the one to go on yamahas its usually the middle one. anyway are you running a completely stock ski? if so checkl to see if the carb recall was done on the ski. You need to pull off the carbs and check the jets on all 3 and the needle and seats. also look at the return line nipple if its jsut a hole with no restrictor then the recall was never done. if youre running lean then you wont have any coloring on the plugs when you run it. it would be white or whitish and the ski motor will feel really hot, the tips of the plugs shoudl be a nice brown color. try to get the same color on all plugs, but dont get it dark brown or black cause youll be too rich then,
you were lean on that cylinder. you should have the low speed screws out 1 1/4 turn and 1 turn on the highs to start tuning it. You rather be rich and foul plugs when tuning than to be lean and ruin the motor,

Raider, i took off the carb and on the return line nipple, there was just a small pin sized hole. What did the recall consist of and would this be the effect of running on a pre-recall carb?

              You're all set - that is post-recall (built-in restrictor).

So the recall was just to add a pin hole restrictor. That means my problem of running lean is somewhere else and not affected by the recall. could this be a bad cylinder to case gasket? Because the one i took off was in pieces, but i think it was worked on by someone else before myself.

Sure could, if it was leaking.

                    I believe through '97 1100's but I'm not sure.

                        Bryan,

I have seen this recall mentioned before.
What skis and years does it apply to?

                        Thanks,

Bryan, do you guys have a rebuild kit available or do you just do complete engines?

We do sell carb rebuild kits - you're are Minuni SBN, and they are $30 each.
